Sometimes

Sometimes a blessing doesn’t look like a blessing. Sometimes pain separates itself from anger, fear, or distaste. Sometimes just being there, helping a little or not, is enough. Sometimes being you shouts so loud that it is a quiet storm that brings unbelievable peace. I now know that God so honors these sometimes in your life and mine. How do I know when disconnection from confusion, feelings of worthlessness, and anger towards the wrong in people and situations get pushed down, down, down (from being on the top of the list) – headed to null and void?

We make emotional and psychological investments in things based on a misguided notion that things are stable and will abide unchanged in time and space – while in fact, change is defined by the very nature of time and space. It is when we are able to disconnect with surface issues and emotions that our being is flooded with calm and peace. This place of mindfulness is unique within all of us but serves the same exact purpose for each or us. If we know that where the mind goes, the body follows, then we must give serious attention to what and how we think. Whatever fills our mind will be the governing essence of our beliefs and actions.

Our lifestyles are a result of what we believe, how we think and why we do the things we do. Our health has a direct correlation to our lifestyle choices. Our choices are made out of the abundance of what we value most. During times of great turbulence, like the sudden pandemic with changes brought on by Covid-19, we get to re-think what is truly treasured and significant for our life. This re-think, this war of beliefs, emotions and objectives, takes place in our minds long before the body selects an active response.

Sometimes is a great narrative form for the unknown. It signifies how what worked before somehow doesn’t work now. Or how the mundane of yesterday becomes the exceptional of today. It’s when that same moment of 1,000 times before ceases to exist and is forever gone. Conducting an inventory of what we have left in spite of this unknown is the first piece of ammunition we have to fight in this war of re-think. Next comes a re-count of support available from relationships, perhaps from people, places, or things never counted before. The last weapon to navigate this war lies in the examination of self and self-care. These three approaches to our re-think open the door for creativity, strength, courage, focus, provision, and hope to reign!

We cannot always track blessings the way we want them. Which is why sometimes the greatest blessing ever in the history of our being in fact does not look like a blessing at all. Often, what we think makes the attributes of a blessing (could, would, or should) somewhat sketchy. Let’s not get this twisted any longer, you and I still have to work – not necessarily for the blessing, but definitely in the blessing or because of the blessing. It helps me before, during, and after these sometimes moments and blessings to look for God in the mix, to stop and listen for that still voice and to not be surprised when sometimes my spirit enables me to shout out loud to His glory.

When we know more, we can do better. Letting Jesus be Lord – His being in control – is so much better than anything we could do without Him. So, why can it take us so long to yield to His will and His way? The enemy makes us think we’re losing something when God is in control over our life—when actually, we gain something under His control, things like peace, freedom, ability, compassion, and lots of un-thinkable GOOD stuff! Last thought: Don’t let the sometimes of the unknown stop you from your best with the known Creator of the Universe.
